Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

HeatShield Chimney Cleaning in Cupertino, CA

We provide independent HeatShield chimney cleaning and resurfacing service across Cupertino, and what separates our work here is that we check caps and screens before we ever reach for a creosote scraper. In Cupertino, most flues clog with redwood needle litter, sap, and bird nests during the dry season before creosote ever builds up. If you own a HeatShield-lined flue in Cupertino and want it inspected by someone who works with the product daily, call (866) 596-8327.

Our HeatShield experience runs deep. We install and repair HeatShield Cerfractory flue sealant across the South Bay, and it’s one of the ceramic liners we spec most often because it lets us restore cracked or spalled clay flues without tearing out masonry. We’re an independent service provider, not manufacturer-affiliated, and our credibility comes from measured, hands-on work with the product. We also offer HeatShield sales & service across the peninsula.

Why Cupertino Residents Choose Us for HeatShield Service

HeatShield is a ceramic resurfacing system, and it only works as well as the prep underneath it. We’ve spent years working with HeatShield in Cupertino homes, and the difference between a job that lasts and one that fails within a few seasons comes down to whether the flue was actually swept clean before the sealant went on. Nolan Breck, our owner, studied heating and ventilation through the HVAC program at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, then spent more than two decades working chimneys, fireplaces, and dryer vents across the South Bay, including Los Altos. He grew up fighting a smoky fireplace in Cuesta Park, and he’s seen most of what can go wrong in a flue. If the flue isn’t clean, the rest of it doesn’t matter.

We stock genuine HeatShield Cerfractory sealant, not an aftermarket substitute. The aftermarket lookalikes have failed on us within a few seasons, and we won’t use them. We carry OEM-compatible caps, screens, and chase covers sized for the flues common in Cupertino, so we’re not ordering parts and making you wait a second visit. When we inspect a HeatShield coat in Cupertino, we check the cap first, then the crown, then the bond seam itself.

Common HeatShield Chimney Cleaning Problems We Solve in Cupertino

  • Spalled clay tile behind a HeatShield coat. A Cupertino chimney without a cap collects redwood needles and bird debris that hold moisture against the flue wall. That moisture pushes tile apart, and the HeatShield coat can’t hold a surface that’s actively cracking underneath.
  • Bond failure from an unswept flue. If a previous contractor applied HeatShield over oil-soaked creosote, the ceramic layer doesn’t mechanically bond. We see this in older ranch homes around 95014 where flues were resurfaced quickly during a sale, without a proper sweep first. The coat lifts and flakes within a season or two.
  • Hairline separation at the HeatShield-clay interface. Crown and flashing cracks let the first big rain soak the flue shell. When the masonry swells and contracts, the seam between the HeatShield coat and the original tile opens slightly. We catch this with a level 2 inspection, often before the homeowner notices any draft issue.
  • Poor draft after a gas insert retrofit. Homeowners in the newer two-story builds in 94087 often add a gas insert to an existing fireplace. If the flue wasn’t resized or the HeatShield job was undercut during the retrofit, the unit drafts poorly and leaves a cold, sooty smoke shelf. We diagnose this during cleaning and can correct the venting.
  • Bird and squirrel entry through a missing or rusted cap. Cupertino’s long dry season, May through October, is when starlings and squirrels nest. A missing cap means nesting material compacts on the HeatShield surface. The flue itself may be sound, but the blockage is total. Cap installation is the fix, and we do it the same visit.

HeatShield Service in Cupertino: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment

Cupertino’s long dry season shapes how we approach HeatShield service differently than we would in a wetter climate. In the deep-lot neighborhoods beneath the heritage redwoods, a chimney swept clean in April can have a fresh nest and a quarter-inch of needle litter on the smoke shelf by October. The redwoods drop constantly, and the valley oaks add sap that makes whatever lands on the flue stick. That means Cupertino flues see more cap-and-screen work than heavy creosote removal. We check the cap, the screen, and the crown before anything else, because animal entry is more common here than creosote buildup. If the cap is intact and the screen is whole, the flue stays dry and the HeatShield coat stays bonded. If the cap is gone, even a good resurfacing job starts failing within a couple of seasons. Our technicians learn to read a Cupertino chimney by what’s sitting on the smoke shelf before we ever look at the liner itself.

Last September we were called to a 1960s ranch off a deep-lot street in the 95014 side of Cupertino after the homeowner heard scratching in the flue. A level 2 inspection showed a starling nest on the smoke shelf and a cracked crown, plus a hairline seam in the HeatShield coat where a previous homeowner had left soot under the resurfacing. We swept it out, replaced the missing cap with a stainless multi-flue cap, and reapplied HeatShield sealant over the prepared flue. The unit drafted cleanly on the first cold night.

HeatShield Models & Products We Service in Cupertino

We service the full HeatShield product line as it applies to Cupertino homes. That includes the HeatShield Cerfractory Flue Sealant for cracked clay tile flues, the HeatShield Resurfacing System for open-face damper-area repairs, Cerfractory sealant applied over stainless liners up to 6 inches, and joint repair for spalled masonry flues. We use genuine HeatShield Cerfractory, which cures at the dense, insulating consistency a flue resurfacing job needs. When a flue is sound, we clean and cap it. Full relining only when the tile is actually cracked through or the shell is compromised. That’s the repair-first stance we take in Cupertino, and it saves homeowners money that would’ve been spent on unnecessary relining.

HeatShield Service Pricing in Cupertino

HeatShield cleaning and inspection in Cupertino typically runs between $180 and $340, depending on flue height, cap condition, and what we find during the level 2 inspection. Resurfacing work, where we apply HeatShield Cerfractory to a prepared flue, ranges from $1,500 to $4,500 based on how much of the flue needs coating and whether we’re repairing joints or doing a full resurface. The price drivers here are simple: accessibility, flue condition, and whether a cap replacement is needed at the same time. We always do a visual and camera check before quoting resurfacing, so you see exactly what we see. Call (866) 596-8327 for a free estimate.
